Everything you need to run great pre-mortem sessions in Slack

01 Getting started

Step 1 — Install Pre-Mortem from the Slack App Directory. Click "Add to Slack" and follow the OAuth flow to grant the required permissions.

Step 2 — In any Slack channel, type /premortem and press Enter.

Step 3 — Enter your session topic (e.g., "Q3 product launch") and submit. A session card will appear in the channel.

Step 4 — Team members click to propose risks. Once everyone has contributed, click Generate risks to let AI surface additional risks.

Step 5 — Everyone votes on likelihood and severity for each risk. Click Finish session to get the prioritized risk report.

02 Frequently asked questions

What is a pre-mortem? +
A pre-mortem is a structured technique where a team imagines a project has already failed and works backwards to identify what could go wrong. It's more effective than traditional brainstorming because it bypasses the optimism bias that affects most planning sessions.
Who can start a session? +
Any member of the Slack workspace who has access to a channel where Pre-Mortem is installed can start a session using the /premortem command.
Who can participate in voting? +
Any member of the channel can participate in a session — proposing risks, voting on likelihood and severity, and viewing the final report. Participation is not limited to the session creator.
How many sessions do I get on the free plan? +
The free plan includes 5 sessions per workspace. All features — AI risk generation, voting, and the prioritized report — are available on the free plan.
What happens when I run out of free sessions? +
When your free sessions are used up, the app will notify you that your workspace has reached its limit and offer a link to upgrade to the Pro plan for unlimited sessions.
How do I upgrade to Pro? +
When you've used your free sessions, the app will display an upgrade link in Slack. Only workspace admins are shown the payment link. Billing is handled securely via Stripe.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription? +
Use the /premortem billing command to access your billing portal, where you can view, update, or cancel your subscription at any time. Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period.
How do I remove Pre-Mortem from my workspace? +
Go to your Slack workspace settings → Apps, find Pre-Mortem, and click Remove. This will revoke the app's access to your workspace. To request deletion of your workspace data, email us at hello@pre-mortem.xyz.
Is my session content private? +
Session content is only visible to members of the Slack channel where the session is running. When you use "Generate risks", session content is sent to OpenAI's API to produce AI suggestions. We do not use your data to train AI models. See our Privacy Policy for details.
